MISSION STATEMENT:

The Columbus Animal Control Department shall be operated in such a manner as to insure the safety, welfare, and humane treatment of all animals and persons the department or its staff come in contact with.

NEWS:

 

  • The City Council approved the ammendments to the ordinances unanimously tonight (5/7/08). The new ordinanaces are in effect immediately and are being enforced. The Animal Control Department would like to thank everyone who contributed to this long and thoughtful process.
  • UPDATE: The Animal Control Commission has decided on a revised set of ordinances to submit to the City Council on Wednesday, May 7. The Breeder's Permit has been struck from the ordinance and in its place a fine of $100 for the first offense and $500 for subsequent offenses of unaltered animals running loose. The option is available to have the animals neutered for a refund of the fine. To see the entire new ordinance click here.

  • Celebrate any month by coming to the shelter and taking home one of your own, or maybe just give them a little play-time. You could also donate to the Spay/Neuter fund to make it more possible for others to adopt an animal if you are unable to yourself.

SERVICES:

  • 24 Hour Service.
  • Pick-up of stray, injured or dead animals within the city limits.
  • Investigation of complaints regarding unrestrained animals, nuisance problems and neglected or abused animals within the city limits.
  • Housing of strays and unwanted pets from the city.
  • Animals available for adoption as pets into good permanent homes.
  • Humane euthanasia of sick, injured, and unwanted animals.
  • Return of healthy wildlife to their natural environment.
  • Quarantining of bite cases for observation as required by law.
  • Humane education and pet care programs for youth, school, and adult groups. A variety of pamphlets, films and other materials are available. Tours of the shelter facility can also be arranged.

For the protection of your pet and the convenience of your neighbors, please obvserve the following local ordinances:

  • All dogs and cats over the age of 3 months must be vaccinated against rabies, and licensed with the City of Columbus each year. YOUR CITY LICENSE IS TRACEABLE 24 HOURS A DAY. You can click here to get a printable mail-in license application

  • Dogs and cats must be under the owners control at all times.

  • Pets must be provided with adequate food, water, shelter, and necessary medical attention.

  • Pet owners must prevent their animals from creating a public nuisance (e.g., excessive barking, damaging property, harassing pedestrians).
